The City of Newport Beach (City) created a “pocket park” on a 1,300-square-foot parcel of land donated by the Cox family that is located along East Coast Highway in Corona del Mar. The pocket park features terraced, drought-tolerant landscaping, retaining walls, bench seating, and a walkway. The project budget, including design and construction, was $113,976.
The former site consisted of a sloped lawn where Mayor Edward D. Selich envisioned a small community park. Upon locating the parcel owner, Ms. Myrtle Cox, he was pleasantly surprised by her offer to donate the property to the City for the creation of the park.
The December 1 event consists of a brief dedication ceremony to acknowledge the Cox family for its generous donation.
The pocket park is located at 3140 East Coast Highway in Corona del Mar near the Larkspur Avenue intersection, adjacent to Hobie Surf Shop.
