District 5 - Jeff Herdman (2020)
Council Member Jeff Herdman epitomizes integrity, energy, hard work, and commitment to any endeavor he embarks upon. Raised in Los Angeles and Newport Beach, California, after graduation from University of California, Long Beach, he began a career in education in l969 as a teacher. Upon completion of his Master's Degree, the positions of principal, director and assistant superintendent were the next steps in two of the top public school districts in Orange County. His doctorate in Educational Leadership was earned at Chapman University. His career came to a close in 2005 when he retired and began his role in community service and volunteer work. Wanting, and having the time to give back to the community he grew up in, as well as the passion, Jeff became the president of the Little Balboa Island Property Owners’ Association (an eight-year term), while also serving as president of the Balboa Island Improvement Association for five years. Jeff’s dad, Cliff Herdman, was one of the founding members of the Little Balboa Island Property Owners’ Association serving on the first board formed. It was only natural that Jeff would follow in his Dad’s footsteps as a board member and president. In an effort to give back to the city he loves, Jeff has served on the 2012 Newport Beach City Charter Revision Committee, was a Council appointee to the original Tidelands Management Committee, and served on the Newport Beach Civil Service Board.
Jeff’s parents purchased the family “vacation” home on Little Balboa Island in l954. Jeff was just eight years old. His parents joined the Balboa Yacht Club so that he and his brother could take advantage of the sailing program. Their first sailboat was a Snowbird which saw many a race and regatta in addition to the annual Flight of the Snowbirds competition each summer. The brothers then advanced to their own sailboats enjoying a subsequent lifetime of sailing. First learning to water ski in Newport’s Back Bay and surfing on long boards are part of Jeff’s growing up memories. The family home of 62 years on Little Balboa Island continues to be the hub of the Herdman Family.
Family life that includes children Jeff, Jennifer, Mary, and Cindy, and the seven grandchildren they have provided, are a top priority for Jeff and his wife, Sally. Jeff, Sally, and the family enjoy a rich spiritual life at St. Andrews Church in Newport Beach. Boating, travel and basketball are favorite past times for the entire family!
