The City’s contractor has been busy pouring concrete walls and Sunset Ridge Park is starting to take shape! The walls underway include a blade wall, seat wall for the ballfield, a tot lot and butterfly garden seating area, and finally the staircase cheek wall. All walls are being constructed with integral colored concrete with an architectural finish. The restroom facility will also have a rustic “wood-like” finish similar to the blade wall. In addition to all the concrete improvements, the contractor has been installing piping throughout the park to complete the irrigation, drainage, and electrical systems.
Construction is approximately 50 percent complete, is on schedule to complete this December, and within budget.

The proposed 13.67 acre Sunset Ridge Park is situated on the northwest corner of West Coast Highway and Superior Avenue in the West Newport community. The proposed park is to be an ‘active’ park per the city’s General Plan. Proposed park amenities include:
- Pony League Baseball Field
- Soccer Fields
- Children's Play Area
- Picnic Area
- Memorial Butterfly Garden
- Overlook Area with Shade Structure
- Meandering Concrete Walkways
- Meandering Retaining Walls
Public parking is available at the adjacent existing parking lot off Superior Avenue. Visitors can access the park from one of two proposed walkways or the stair case which is connected to the Superior Avenue and West Coast Highway sidewalk. A serene butterfly garden is located at the east end of the park. As you follow the meandering walkways to the west, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean from a shaded overlook area. Moving further west, visitors will find two soccer fields and a Pony League baseball field. The far west side of the park features a picnic area and a children’s play area for family enjoyment. Restrooms are also located on the west side for convenience.
In addition to the program elements, the landscape design will compliment the overall character of West Newport while paying special attention to views of adjacent residents and the existing natural habitat. The passive area landscape on the perimeter of the site will be a more drought tolerant informal landscape, while the active play areas will be more manicured including turf grass. All landscape areas will be irrigated using an automatic underground system. The irrigation system will be divided into several systems based on the water requirements and sun orientation of landscape within each hyrodrozone. The irrigation system shall provide 100% head to head coverage and be designed to minimize overspray.
