For current information regarding the City's transition to automated residential refuse collection please visit the Residential Refuse Collection page under Current Projects & Issues.
Residential refuse collection service is provided to approximately 27,000 homes in the city by CR&R Environmental Services (CR&R). CR&R utilizes automated and semi-automated methods to collect refuse. Collected materials are transported to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where it is sorted for recyclables. CR&R also provides additional services at no-cost: collection of bulky items, household hazardous waste, sharps, and electronic waste; compost giveaways; and document shredding.
The City is required by State law to recycle at least 50% of all trash generated. Both residential and commercial refuse is sorted for recyclables. The City of Newport Beach is currently in compliance with State recycling regulations. Additionally, construction and demolition projects generate a high volume of recyclable material that is counted towards the City’s recycling rate.
Franchised Haulers provide commercial solid waste collection within the city. This includes contractor-generated solid waste for residential projects. Franchised Haulers are required to comply with state-mandated recycling and diversion requirements, and provide the City with monthly tonnage reports, which includes collected and recycled weight in tons.
Franchised Haulers can also provide dumpster bin rental services within the city. Please contact the individual haulers on the Franchised Haulers List for specific rates and availability.
