Safety - Service - Professionalism
The Life Safety Services Division's mission is to provide a full range of services encompassing community education and preparedness, emergency planning, life safety code enforcement, fire inspections, vegetation management, and plan check services of new and tenant improvement construction projects.
The Life Safety Services Division is focused on the prevention of the loss of life and property, and damage to the environment through education, enforcement and preparedness. We are committed to providing the highest level of service and expertise in partnership with our community.
Fire Safety Inspections:
Over 6500 commercial occupancies are included in the Division’s inspection program; the majority of which are inspected by the Department’s firefighters. Highly technical inspections, such as schools, care facilities, hospitals and similar institutions are inspected by Life Safety Services Specialists from the Life Safety Services Division.
Prior to issuing any permit for construction or alteration, the Life Safety Services Division reviews plans in conjunction with the Community Development Department/Building Division. Please note: Residential fire sprinkler systems are reviewed exclusively by the Community Development Department/Building Division and can be contacted at (949) 644-3200.
The Life Safety Services Division works with developers, architects, and engineers to ensure that all fire protection requirements are met for building improvements, new development and structural modifications. Fire Department review of plans ensures the safety of our personnel, the community and guests of the City of Newport Beach.
The Life Safety Services Division's plan check counter is located at 100 Civic Center Drive, Newport Beach, First Floor, Bay-D, (949) 644-3106.

The Fire Department investigates all fires to determine fire cause. Our fire investigators work in conjunction with the Newport Beach Police Department and assist in criminal investigations by determining the origin and cause of fires. An additional focus is on identifying factors that can be used to lessen the number of fires in the future. Data from fire investigations can help enhance inspection procedures, public education programs and fire suppression activities.
Special Fire Protection Areas:
The Life Safety Services Division provides inspection services to all of the residential properties within the City’s wildland interface areas. All Special Fire Protection Areas are inspected annually by one of the Division’s fire protection specialists to insure compliance. The City of Newport Beach Municipal Code contains several building code requirements that only apply to structures built adjacent to Special Fire Protection Areas.
The Newport Beach Fire Department is responsible for the collection of hazardous materials disclosure information and business emergency planning. This information is collected annually from all businesses within the City of Newport Beach that handle or store more than 55 gallons, 200 cubic feet or 500 pounds of hazardous materials. The information is collected and reviewed by the Life Safety Services Division, then disseminated to fire units in the field for use in fighting fires at these businesses. The Business Emergency Plan (BEP) is completed electronically and assistance can be obtained at the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA). For more information, click OC Open Lab Flyer.
