Paddle with the Mayor

Mayor Nancy Gardner invites local paddle boarders, kayakers, canoeists, outrigger enthusiasts, and others to join her as she paddles through Newport Harbor this Saturday, October 13 at 9 a.m. Participants must provide their own watercraft and safety equipment. Participants are welcome to travel the full, 3.75-mile route around Balboa Island or may join in along the way. Light refreshments will be served on the beach at China Cove when the group returns. The Balboa Beach Fest is a benefit for the Balboa Performing Arts Theater Foundation and will feature 10 artists on two stages. Free festival parking will be available at Hoag Hospital’s parking structure, located at 540 Superior Ave., Newport Beach. There will be free shuttle service from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. between the parking structure and the Beach Fest.

The Newport Beach Police Dept. is participating in a Tip-A-Cop event for Special Olympics of Southern California. All proceeds from the event will go directly to Special Olympic athletes in the Orange County Region. Memorial Bike Ride

Following recent accidents involving bicyclists in Newport Beach, community members and cycling advocates have organized a memorial bike ride for October 28. The approximately 1.2-mile ride will be a slow-paced, remembrance lap around Newport Center Drive starting at Santa Rosa and proceeding south. The ride is free, but the net proceeds of related fundraising efforts (sale of commemorative wrist bands and t-shirts) will be directed toward bicycle safety improvement projects within Newport Beach.
