FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Literacy Program to Celebrate International Literacy Day
Newport Beach, CA (August 20, 2010) -- Newport Beach Public Library Literacy Services will celebrate International Literacy Day with a special program on Thursday, September 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Friends Meeting Room at the Central Library, 1000 Avocado Avenue, Newport Beach. The program will focus on the importance of literacy outreach in the community and will recognize the contributions of the many volunteers and tutors that work in our local Literacy Program, as well as the learners who work so hard to acquire new skills.
The program will honor the recipient of the Rochelle Hoffman, an annual award given to a learner that exemplifies the spirit of the program with their hard work and dedication to acquiring literacy skills.
The goal of many of our learners is to improve their English reading and writing skills so that they can participate more fully in the community. Newport Beach Literacy Services will also proudly acknowledge several learners who have recently become United States citizens.
The public is invited to attend the program and learn more about the Newport Beach Public Library Literacy Program. Refreshments will be served along with homemade specialties made by adult learners in the program representing their many different countries of origin.
For more information, contact Cherall Weiss, Literacy Coordinator, at (949) 717-3874.
