Downloading ebooks from Overdrive to the Amazon Kindle
In order to get Overdrive ebooks onto your Kindle, you'll first need to create an account with Amazon and register your Kindle device.
Using a first generation Kindle? Read this message!
From the library website, click the "Downloadable Books" menu and choose "Overdrive Audio/ebooks"
On the Overdrive website, select a Kindle-compatible title. For your convenience, you can select Advance Search and have Overdrive list only Kindle books.
To do this, from the Advance Search screen, select Kindle Book from the Format menu. You can also choose to specifically show only available titles.
Pick a book! You'll know if a title is available if Add to Bookbag appears. If the book is unavailable, the text will show Place Hold. When selecting a book, make sure you choose the Kindle version as Overdrive will display all formats available for that title.
When you have selected your book, click the Proceed to Checkout link, where you will be asked to choose Newport Beach Public Library from a drop down menu and then type in your library card number. Select the duration of your checkout (1 or 2 weeks) and then click Confirm Check Out.
From the Download screen, click the Get for Kindle button and you will be taken to Amazon's website. Make sure you are signed into the account used to register your Kindle.
Click the Get Library Book link and choose which device you want the book sent to (in the event you have multiple devices registered to your account).
Amazon will tell you that the book is ready to download via their wireless service. Turn on your Kindle and go to the Archived Items screen. Find your book, download it and enjoy!
Overdrive titles cannot be renewed. If your time has expired and you were not finished with the book, you will have to go through this process again. You can return ebooks early, which can be done from the Manage Your Kindle section of the Amazon website.
If you purchased the Kindle when it was first released, you will not be able to download books wirelessly. Instead, you will use the USB cable that came with your device to transfer books to your Kindle.
Follow the instructions above on how to search for Kindle books. When you click Get Library Book from the Amazon page, you will be asked to download the book onto your computer.
Connect the Kindle to your computer using the USB cable provided. PC users, your Kindle will appear as a drive within My Computer. Mac users, the Kindle drive will appear on the desktop.
Open the Kindle drive and click and drag the file you downloaded from Amazon into the Documents folder.
Once file has been copied, disconnect the Kindle from your computer. You'll find your ebook on the Home screen. Click on the title and enjoy!
