Coastal Commission Denies Newport Beach Banning Ranch

On February 9, 2017, the California Coastal Commission formally denied the project’s coastal development permit application. The denial was for a significantly reduced the project, with 895 dwelling units, a 75-room hotel, a 20-bed hostel and 45,100 square feet of retail space on 62 acres.

On October 7, 2015, after an eight-hour public hearing, the California Coastal Commission postponed action on the Newport Banning Ranch coastal development permit application. At the request of the Chair Steve Kinsey, the applicant (Newport Banning Ranch, LLC) agreed to a ninety (90) day extension to provide an opportunity to work with Coastal Commission staff to come up with a reduced footprint project that would clean up the oil field and open to public access while reducing potential impacts to environmentally sensitive habitat areas (ESHAs).  Project Description

PA2008-114  - Newport Banning Ranch, LLC, submitted an application for a coastal development permit to the California Coastal Commission on February 1, 2013, which is the next step in the entitlement process. The application was deemed complete on April 29, 2015 by the Coastal Commission staff, and is scheduled for a Coastal Commission public hearing on Wednesday, October 7, 2015.

The proposed project includes a maximum of 1,375 dwelling units, 75,000 square feet of commercial retail, 75-room boutique hotel, "bed and breakfast", or other overnight accommodations, parks and open space.
