This Wednesday we celebrated the 11th annual State of CERT Awards banquet to recognize efforts of all of our Newport Beach CERT volunteers. If you were unable to attend the event, it will be broadcast on NBTV and available on the City web-site and here are some of the highlights:
- This is the 20th anniversary of the Newport Beach Fire Department CERT program. Over the last twenty years we have held 77 CERT programs and certified over 2,000 participants.
- Special recognition awards were given to:
- Richard Eimers for his deployment to Butte County,
- CERT Neighborhood of the Year- Irvine Terrace,
- CERT School of the Year- Sage Hill School,
- Spirit of CERT Award- Darlene Covington,
- CERT Instructor of the Year- Lifeguard Captain Mark Herman,
- CERT Volunteer of the Year- Doak Hefner
- Lifetime Achievement Award- Fire Engineer Alan Baker
Congratulations to all of our CERT volunteers for everything you all do to better prepare the Newport Beach community and thank you for remaining active with our program.
In terms of upcoming events, we have plenty of openings in both of our spring 2019 CERT programs. Our Thursday program starts next Thursday and our all-day Saturday program starts the first Saturday in March and the class schedules are listed below. Also, listed below is all of the information on the CERT mandatory re-certification classes in 2019. All CERT mandatory re-certification classes registration will close 10 days prior to the class so the February 11th class is now closed. If you have questions whether you are an active Newport Beach CERT volunteer, you must have attended the mandatory re-certification classes in 2017 or you participated in one of the nine CERT program offered in 2017 and 2018, please email email@example.com if you have questions about your CERT volunteer status. The information of the CERT mandatory re-certification classes is listed below, please note that you must register though the on-line system.
Lastly, we have added a few new events and have updated our 2019 CERT Master Calendar and those events are listed below.
Newport Beach CERT Volunteer Richard Eimers presentation on his deployment to Butte County- Monday, March 4
On Monday, March 4th at 6:30 pm, Newport Beach CERT volunteer Richard Eimers will be giving a special presentation on his deployment to Butte County to assist with the recovery efforts with the Paradise Fire. Richard was deployed for seven days with two travel days for a total of nine days. This was the first statewide activation of every CERT program in state history. If you are interested in what it was like to be deployed to the most destructive fire in state history then this is a presentation for you. The presentation is open to all Newport Beach CERT volunteers and anyone interested in community preparedness. Please spread the word about this special presentation. You do not need to register to attend.
CERT "All Hands" Meeting- Tuesday, February 26
The first CERT quarterly "All Hands" meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 26 at 6:30 pm at the Newport Beach Central Library Friends Room. For our initial meeting of 2019, we are excited to have Newport Beach Police Department Officer Troy Zeeman speak about active shooter scenarios and his direct experience with the Las Vegas Route 91 incident. Following Officer Zeeman's presentation we will also do a hands-on review of how to stop the bleed for all interested participants. All CERT "All Hands" meetings are open to all Newport Beach CERT volunteers and any interested community members. You do not need to register to attend.
Earthquake and Tsunami Awareness Workshop- Thursday, March 28- SAVE THE DATE
In conjunction with Tsunami Awareness week, the City of Newport Beach is hosting an Earthquake and Tsunami Awareness Workshop on Thursday, March 28th at 6:00 pm at the Newport Beach Civic Center Community Room. The workshop will have guest presenters from the state. This event is open to all Orange County residents. Registration is not required to attend.
In 2017, the Fire Department held mandatory CERT re-certification classes for all Newport Beach CERT volunteers that wanted to remain active with the program. If you received an annual letter in the mail then you are one of those active CERT volunteers. All Newport Beach CERT volunteers that would like to remain active with the program must register and attend one of the mandatory re-certification classes listed below in 2019. Similar to the State of CERT awards banquet, we have set-up on-line registration for the 2019 Mandatory Re-Certification classes. All Newport Beach CERT volunteers are encouraged to register for one of the mandatory re-certification classes listed below. Please note that CERT volunteers only need to attend one of the classes listed below. If you have any questions about the mandatory CERT re-certification classes, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.

Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 CERT Program Schedules
The spring 2019 and fall 2019 CERT program schedules have been finalized. This spring the fire department will host a Thursday day program that starts on February 7 and an all-day Saturday program that starts on March 2 and this fall the fire department will host a Tuesday-Thursday evening program that starts on September 17 and an all-day Saturday program that begins on September 21. If you would like CERT class postcards for to distribute at neighborhood events, please email nbcert@nbfd,net. Interested participants are encouraged to apply by completing and mailing in a CERT program application to reserve their space.
Community Preparedness Outreach Presentations
If your home owner's association, business, school or civic group are interested in a fire department presentation in 2019 or if you are having a CERT neighborhood event that you would like for us to attend please schedule as early as possible for all of 2019. The fire department offers one hour community preparedness presentations on disaster preparedness, hands-only CPR and how to stop the bleed to Newport Beach home owner's associations, civic groups, businesses and schools. A minimum of 15 participants are required. If your group is interested in a community preparedness presentation please email email@example.com with the date, time, location and the estimated number of participants. Please provide as much advanced notice as possible for dates in 2019.
