Newport Beach CERT Volunteers,

Thank you to the 402 Newport Beach CERT volunteers that attended one of the eight CERT mandatory re-certification training's held from February-June of this year.  As a reminder, Newport Beach CERT volunteer mandatory re-certification training's are held every other year in odd years with the next round in 2021.  The most recent southern California earthquakes reinforce the importance of CERT and community preparedness so thank for remaining active Newport Beach CERT volunteers and please encourage your family, friends and neighbors to become better prepared by taking one of of fall 2019 CERT programs.  Also listed below is information on CERT summer community outreach booths, two American Heart Association CPR/AED and First aid classes, the 1st Annual CERT Decathlon with Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach CERT programs on August 7th, the CERT "All Hands" meeting on Tuesday, August 20th and the 11th annual Disaster Preparedness Expo.  Please email to register or with any questions. Corona Del Mar Library and Fire Station #5 Dedication- Saturday, July 20th 

On Saturday, July 20th the Newport Beach Library and Fire Departments are hosting the grand opening on the Corona Del Mar Library and Fire Station #5 from 10:30 am-12:30 pm.  The event is open to all Newport Beach residents.  At this time, we have plenty of CERT volunteers to staff our community education booth but all CERT volunteers are welcome and encouraged to attend.  All CERT volunteers that plan on attending are encouraged to wear your CERT green vest. 

Summer Community Education booths- NBPD National Night Out and Library Concert Series

The Newport Beach Police Department is holding their annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 6th from 4:00-7:00 pm at Bonita Canyon Sports Park.  We are in need of 3-5 CERT volunteers to staff our booth from 3:30-7:30 pm.  The remaining library summer concert series are August 25 and September 15 at the Civic Center Green and 3-5 CERT volunteers are needed from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm each evening.  If you are interested in volunteering for either of these events, please email  

CERT Decathlon with Costa Mesa CERT and Huntington Beach CERT- Wednesday, August 7th

The Newport Beach Fire Department is hosting the 1st Annual CERT Decathlon with Costa Mesa CERT and Huntington Beach CERT on Wednesday, August 7th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Newport Beach Fire Station #7.  The friendly event will put each of the three CERT teams through three scenarios that highlight the most important aspects of the CERT curriculum.  Up to 30 Newport Beach CERT volunteers can participate.  At this time, we only have 11 CERT volunteers and we need at least another 20 for our team.  If we do not get enough Newport Beach CERT volunteers then we will still host the event. The event will be really fun and a great opportunity to interact with two other Orange County CERT programs.  The event is for all Newport Beach CERT volunteers and will be a great opportunity to practice your skills in a low stress, fun environment. CERT "All Hands" meeting- Tuesday, August 20th 

The next CERT quarterly "All Hands" meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 20th at 6:30 pm at the Newport Beach Central Library Friends Room.  For the meeting, the presenter will be Alex Tardy from NOAA/National Weather Service.  Alex is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist and the Manager for Emergency Preparedness and Partner Collaboration.  He will be presenting on weather predictions/warnings and tsunami hazards/warnings.  The meeting is open to all interested Newport Beach residents and no registration is required to attend.     

CERT American Heart Association CPR/AED and First Aid classes

The fire department has scheduled two American Heart Association CPR/AED and First Aid classes, exclusively taught by and for our CERT volunteers.  Each class requires a minimum of 15 participants for the class to be held and you must register at least 10 days prior to the class.  At this time, we do not have enough participants to hold either the August or October classes so if you would like to attend either please register as soon as possible.  The cost to attend the class is $40.  To register for any of the CPR/AED and First aid classes listed below email

Save the Date- 11th Annual Disaster Preparedness Expo- Saturday, September 7th

In conjunction with the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, the fire department is hosting its 11th annual Disaster Preparedness Expo on Saturday, September 7th from 11:00 am-2:00 pm at the Civic Center Green.  We are in need of 2-4 CERT volunteers that would like to take the lead in terms of event planning, scheduling and logistics the day of the event.  If you would like to be a lead CERT volunteer for this event, please email  Please save the date as we will be sending out a request for CERT volunteers work the event in August.  

Fall 2019 CERT Program Schedule

The fall 2019 CERT program schedules have been finalized.  This fall the fire department will host a Tuesday-Thursday evening program that starts on September 17 and an all-day Saturday program that begins on September 21.  If you would like CERT class postcards for to distribute at neighborhood events, please email nbcert@nbfd,net.  Interested participants are encouraged to apply by completing and mailing in a CERT program application to reserve their space.  Also, as a reminder, active Newport Beach CERT volunteers are welcome and encouraged to attend any fall CERT individual classes if they would like to review their skills, please email if you would like to attend a class. 

Community Preparedness Outreach Presentations

If your home owner's association, business, school or civic group are interested in a fire department presentation in 2019 or if you are having a CERT neighborhood event that you would like for us to attend please schedule as early as possible for all of 2019. The fire department offers one hour community preparedness presentations on disaster preparedness, hands-only CPR and how to stop the bleed to Newport Beach home owner's associations, civic groups, businesses and schools. A minimum of 15 participants are required.  If your group is interested in a community preparedness presentation please email with the date, time, location and the estimated number of participants.  Please provide as much advanced notice as possible for dates in 2019-2020.
