Happy Hour for Literacy

Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy invites supporters to enjoy Happy Hour with Steven Rowley, bestselling author of “Lily and the Octopus” and “The Editor” on Saturday, October 26 at 6 p.m. in the Friends Meeting Room at the Central Library, 1000 Avocado Avenue, Newport Beach.

Steven Rowley’s debut novel, “Lily and the Octopus,” made a quick rise on the American Booksellers Association's IndieBound Bestseller List when published in June 2016. The charming story about the relationship between a man and his dying dachshund, was recently picked up by Amazon Studios and is being adapted as a feature film.

Rowley will focus his Happy Hour talk on his new book, “The Editor.” In “The Editor,” Rowley tells the story of a struggling writer whose novel is acquired by editor Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Even though it seems like a dream come true for a young writer, Rowley's fictional hero soon finds himself struggling to meet his editor's expectations and faces the wrath of his mother, who does not appreciate the fact that James's novel exposes family secrets. Publisher’s Weekly highlighted “The Editor” as a star read and in its recent review observes, “Rowley deliberately mines the sentiment of the mother/son bond, but skillfully saves it from sentimentality; this is a winning dissection of family, forgiveness, and fame.”

Tickets for the Happy Hour with Steven Rowley are available for online purchase at $35 per person and include a pre-lecture reception in the Bamboo Courtyard with wine, beer, soft drinks and light appetizers. Space is limited and tickets will sell out quickly. Proceeds from the event fund literacy services for adult learners at the Newport Beach Public Library. Tickets and information:
