Every Day by David Levithan

Review by Christina

Every day I am someone else. I am myself--I know I am myself--but I am also someone

else. It has always been like this.

A is a person who wakes up in a different person’s body every morning. Every day a

different life. Always someone the same age. Never the same person twice. A had

established guidelines by which he lives: Avoid being noticed. Never interfere. Never

leave a trace. It has always been like this.

That is, until he wakes up in the body of Justin, a high school jock, and meets his

girlfriend, Rhiannon. A has spent years meeting people without ever knowing them, but

on that morning, when he met Rhiannon, he felt the will to get to know her. Perhaps it

was the cities on her shoes, the determination in her eyes, or the sadness behind her

veil. From that moment, the rules he had set for himself no longer applied, because A

had finally found someone he wants to be with every day.

Every Day is a classic everyone must read. It explores what it means to be a person and

how much of the world is vanity. It’s a tale from the perspective of a drifter, a soul

forever wandering where he will be next, an explorer who have seen the world from

thousands of perspectives , but also a loner who will never get to see anything grow. For

A, his existence is day-to-day, but after he meets Rhiannon, he longed for a tomorrow.

If you stare at the center of the universe, there is a coldness there. A blankness.

Ultimately, the universe doesn’t care about us. Time doesn’t care about us.

That’s why we have to care about each other.

A wants someone he could care about. Someone who would remember his existence. For

most people, their first love won’t be their only love, but for A, Rhiannon is both.

I rate this book a 10/10. As a child, I’ve always imagined what it would be like if I could

switch into my friends’ bodies. I would think how would my life have changed if I had a

brother? I would wonder how it felt to be the rebel. Sometimes when I feel insecure, I

would imagine myself as the most beautiful girl I could think up. But I’m grateful I have

a home, a body I could always return to. In Every Day , I was able to travel with A into

the lives of people fat or thin, boy or girl, light or dark.

And A is not the only one with this ability.

A was first introduced to the concept that he could stay in a body for more than one day

by a drifter who had taken over the body of a pastor. He could finally stay with

Rhiannon! But A understood what that meant for the original host of the body. It would

be murder, and A couldn’t do it. Not even for love.

How then could A have a future with a girl when he is a different person every day?

Rhiannon could never show him to her family. How would they get married or have

children?

I recommend this book to romance and science fiction fans. Just the concept of a

traveling soul has never been done before, and I promise you a unique read.
