Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Review by Haley

Children of Blood Book Cover

This enticing story takes place in Orïsha, a made up world by Tomi Adeyemi. This first book is so impossible to put down that I even want to read during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This story is about magic, romance, and war. It shows an eerily similar representation in what happens in Africa, metaphorically. In Africa many people have suffered, this is shown in the whole book. Where we start off in the book it begins in the small town, Illorin. This town is where the main character,Zelie, and her brother, Tazain, live. They live with their father who is referred as “Baba”.

This book is the definition of amazing. The characters come to life at Adeyemi’s command. She describes each character so professionally and makes it so you can learn the characters’ attitudes, emotions, and whatever else is put into a great character. The names of each character are so realistic to where this takes place. I love this book because not only of its content but of its maturity. This book makes you feel like an adult, it makes you see the struggle some go through. That is amazing for a writer to be able to do and how a reader can see that. She portrays each character differently and as their own self. Adeyemi can create a world where everyone is different and unique which is so amazing because not many authors can do that. I’ve read a lot of great books but this is one of the best. This book will always hold a special place in my mind because of how relating it is and how how each character is portrayed differently. Each character is expressed with such compassion or not even compassion there is also some evil. It shows that there is not just happiness there is also evilness in every world even if it is made up. This book shows that everyone can be different and it’s OK to be different.

I’ve never really read any books that have involved magic. You can read a lot of different themed books but this book just sets it in a very different perspective. It is put this out of the ordinary place that just makes it really extraordinary. That’s different because I don’t know how many books you’ve come across that involves girls and boys with white hair who have amazing powers that they and harness at their command. It sounds silly but it is really sophisticated and mature. It is only silly if the author is trying to describe people with magical powers that make food in an instant. I mean that is pretty weird and homemade food is so good, but that is getting away from the point. What I am trying to say is that this book is a masterpiece in every which way. It makes me feel at home and warm inside. That is the power of reading, it makes you feel so good inside and makes you want to read more.
