Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

Review by Haley

everything everything

Everything Everything was an amazing book. I enjoy the romance and the reality of it. Now that we are in quarantine and have been for over a year now I can really relate to the main character Maddy. To give you a quick rundown on the book, it’s basically about a girl named Maddy who it’s not allowed to go outside because she has a very dangerous disease. Her disease is not contagious, she is just basically allergic to everything. Her mother is her physician. She is also taken care of by her nurse Carla. Maddie and Carla have a very close bond. In the book 100 pages or so in a family moved in across from Maddy’s house. This is Olly’s family. After seeing Olly for the first time she immediately falls in love with him. Rest of the book is basically their love story and a lot of other things I won’t try to spoil anything for you and the beginning of the part that I said it’s just a summary.

Some things I really liked about this book was that now reading it for about the third time it’s much more relatable because of the situation right now. Another thing I really enjoyed about this book is that it’s not just regular writing it’s also emails and text messages drawings compiled into the book. I find that really refreshing and enjoying because it makes the book much more engaging. It also makes it feel much more relatable like the characters are real people out of the world. Some more summary about the book is that the book dives not only deeper into Maddy’s disease but also into mental health and real life problems that many people go through. In the book I found it very inclusive and interesting to see that they included parts of all his life being having problems with his father. Not a lot of books touch on having family issues and that usually just take a picture perfect world unless you’re reading a horror book. In the book it also talked about the loss of family which a lot of people go through today. This makes the characters even more relatable to the readers. For all I feel this book is very relatable in a lot of ways when it comes down to family how people live their lives and people going through different sicknesses.

I think it’s really good to normalize this sort of thing especially through young adult books because there is so many young adults out there that just love to read including me so I think it’s really great that they’re putting these family issues and the sicknesses in these books and mental health as well show that it’s normal and it frequently goes on in our world. One last thing I would like to touch on is I really enjoyed the writing style of this book I felt it was very meek to some of the other books I read. I enjoyed that day included like Maddie‘s hand writing as if she was writing notes in the book. I also enjoy that there were like sticky notes towards the end of the book for when a nurse is putting them up on the fridge. Overall this is one of my favorite books to read whenever I’m bored or just stumped on a book to read. It’s very refreshing and pleasant.
