Review by Katherine

daughter of the pirate king book cover

In Tricia Levenseller’s novel, Daughter of the Pirate King, Alosa Kalligan has a task that her father, lord of all pirates, trusts her and only her with. She must find one of the missing pieces of a map that was split into three generations ago. When united the map will lead to the greatest fortune a pirate could hope for, the lost treasure of the sirens. Retrieving the map however, is a task that will prove to be easier said than done. The map resides with the descendant of an old pirate lord, who had decided on the course of rebelling against Alosa’s father. In order to get on the captain's ship, and find the map Alosa has all but one option. Allow herself to be kidnapped by the ship’s captain, allowing herself time to search every inch of the ship. Alosa's task , although already difficult in it’s own nature, is made infinitely more challenging by the captain’s first mate, who is constantly questioning her motive and making sure to keep a watchful eye on Alosa, Riden. As Riden’s suspicion of her true motives and curiosity over her increase, Alosa finds the tension growing, but what will happen when the tension finally snaps is she does not know. As Alosa continues her quest for the map however, she finds variables she did not foresee, turning what starts as just your average quest into a mystery she must unravel to find the truth, and with it, the map.

In a story brimming with sirens and pirates, courage and deceit, magic and weapons, and a quest for treasure to cap it all off, who knows what will happen next in Alosa’s tumultuous adventure. One thing that can be said about Daughter of the Pirate King, is that it has no shortage of compelling, and interesting characters. From the girlboss of a protagonist Alosa who is never afraid of a fight and is the picture of self confidence that many girls strive to be, to Riden the quintensenall closed off love interest with a dark past and questionable morals, to of course fun side characters that you find yourself loving such as the ever comedic duo of Enwen and Kearan you’ll definitely always have someone to root for. Fans of the enemies to lovers trope will definitely enjoy the book with no shortage of the dramatic tension they longer for appearing between Riden and Alosa with many of the more popular aspects of it from the much loved knife at the love interest throat’s scene to your classic “only one bed” trope that has found many fans among those who love fantasy books with relationships that can be described only as tumultuous. The book ends on the always soul crushing cliff hanger setting you up perfectly for the second and final book in the duology, Daughter of the Siren Queen. The perfect read for getting you out of a reading slump or just simply a fun light read, Daughter of the Pirate King is definitely one to consider reading.
