Colossus Rises by Peter Lerangis

Review by Pranav

the colossus rises book cover

The first book in the Seven Wonders series, “The Colossus Rises” by Peter Lerangis is a fast-paced and action-packed book that will appeal to all readers. With respectable reviews from popular authors such as Rick Riordan, “The Colossus Rises” is a thrilling book to read. Jack Mckinley wakes up on the day of his big math test and notices a patch of white hair on the back of his head in the shape of an upside-down V. As Jack would later come to know, the white patch of hair on his head is called a lambda. In the morning Jack took a Skype call with his did in Singapore and rushes off to school. On the way to school, he gets in trouble with the school bully, Barry Reese. While arguing with him, Jack gets woozy and slips onto the street, getting hit by a late-model Toyota. He wakes up at the local hospital and eventually arrives at the KI, Karai Institute. Jack later comes to know that he was born with a rare disease called G7W, which will automatically kill him when he turns fourteen years old. However, children born with this genetic have complete access to a different part of the brain where only some people breach temporarily. The other kids that Jack meets at the Karai Institute are Cass, Aly, and Marcus. Cass has the ability to speak backward and memorize routes without even thinking about it. Aly is a professional hacker that can manage to get through multiple databases. Marcus, also known as Marco has superhuman strength and speed which make him extremely athletic and strong. Jack is in immediate panic after he’s being held and tries a desperate attempt to leave the Karai Institute sanctuary. Professor Beghad, the leader of the Karai Institute tells Jack about his rare genetic, but Jack does not believe him. If Jack and his group can find the seven loculi then they can live past fourteen years olds and prevent their gene from killing them.  The first book in the Seven Wonders series describes Jack, Aly, Cass, and Marco’s quest to find all of the loculi. The Massyrm is another institute like the Karai devoted to destroying the Karai Institute and finding all of the loculi. In this book, Jack and his new friends travel to Rhodes and get the first loculus. Whenever someone with G7W holds a loculus they are granted a special superpower. The loculus that Jack collects is the locus of flight which allows the person that is holding the loculus to fly. If I were to rate this book, I would rate it a four out of five stars. I would recommend this book to all teens who enjoyed reading the Percy Jackson and 39 Clues series. Peter Lerangis is an incredible author with a unique way of describing a story in a realistic and entertaining way. The Seven Wonders series is a must-read for all fantasy and quest lovers who are in need of something to read. Some other books by Peter Lerangis include, “Smiler’s Bones and Full Tilt” All in all, the first book in the Seven Wonders series will be a fulfilling story for all readers.
