Gone Too Far by Natalie D. Richards

Review by Lana

gone too far book cover

Gone Too Far by Natalie D. Richards follows a senior girl in high school named Piper Woods. She’s sick and tired of high school and can’t wait to finally graduate. She skirts through the edges, just passing through the days, until one morning she finds a mysterious notebook filled with the sins of her classmates and gruesome photographs of some of her fellow students. Not knowing who wrote the book and being curious, she reads the notebook and is suddenly drowning in their wrongdoings. Not too long after, Stella, the popular beautiful girl at school, dies, and Piper gets a text from an unknown number inviting her to punish someone as payback and vengeance for Stella. Should she punish the cheater, bully, or shoplifter? After all, a girl just died and she knows many people who deserve to be punished for it. But sometimes the truth can be dangerous.

I thought that this was an amazing book. It was filled with tension and suspense in each chapter. I was gripping the pages, flipping one after the other with the need to know who is behind the texts, the death, and the notebook. This book kept me guessing until the very end and was very unpredictable. A thriller mystery at its finest. It not only followed a gripping mystery but also covered many ethical dilemmas of high school including stereotypes, popularity and so much more. It included people who everyone assumes act in a certain way because of their popularity status, but proved that those stereotypes are not always true.

The characters in the book were another thing I loved as well. This book is written from the 1st person point of view of Piper Woods. I am personally not a huge fan of when books are written in 1st person but I loved this one. Throughout the story it was nice to see her inner thoughts and see her grapple with conclusions and think of possible answers to all the mysteries at hand. It made me feel like I was in her shoes, putting the pieces together as a detective. I also loved many of the side characters as well. Nick was one of the three popular jocks. The jocks at first seemed rough and mean football players but it was nice to see throughout the story how Nick did not live up to those stereotypes and he turned out to be actually kind, nice, and caring, especially towards Piper.

In addition, I think this book is perfect for readers who are looking for a nice, easy, quick, interesting read. Natalie D. Richards writes her books in a way that it is easy for anyone to read, with concepts that are simple to understand right away and flowy language that conveys such good imagery that you feel you are in the school with Piper herself and all the other places she ventures into on the pages of this book.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book. It was an interesting and gripping thriller mystery that I adored the whole way through and I would recommend it to anyone looking to sit back, relax and read a good book filled with adventure and mystery.
