They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

Review by Jayden

they both die at the end book cover

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera is an adventure from the beginning of the book to the end. It is a story about a boy named Mateo and another boy named Rufus, and both were told that they were going to die within the next twenty four hours. A service called Death-Cast is able to predict the day that each person will die, and they call the person to warn them to live out their last day to the fullest. After both Mateo and Rufus get a call from Death-Cast, they look for a Last Friend, or someone to spend their last day with. Luckily, they were selected to be each other’s Last Friend, and their last day alive, or their End Day, is very intriguing and full of life. This book is told in alternating perspectives each chapter, which really gives the reader a view into the mind of each character, even the ones who are just associated with Mateo and Rufus.

This book was a good read, and it definitely felt like I was with Mateo and Rufus, along with all their friends on their End Day. I was constantly paranoid throughout the entire book, just waiting for what was supposed to happen to both characters. I definitely felt like I was a part of their life, and I could sense the tension they were feeling, just waiting for the end to come, as was predicted by Death-Cast.  It was a slightly suspenseful book, but it made me realize how I should live every day to the fullest I can. Not every day is guaranteed, and unlike Mateo and Rufus, we do not get a call to tell us which one will be our last. I liked the detail in this book and the imagination that went into it. The different experiences in this book were very unique and unlike anything I have read before. I also really liked how this novel was told in different perspectives because I feel that it completely rounded out the story and just added another level of storytelling to it. I would not necessarily say that I did not like the ending, but I just did not really agree with it. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes colorful yet sad books, and also those who are fans of friends doomed from the beginning. I would also recommend this book to people who like a book that has both positive elements and negative elements to it.

I would also recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about new adventures and about somewhat futuristic settings, or at least a setting where Death-Cast is something that can be real! Readers that like stories that are told from multiple different perspectives would also enjoy this book. I had heard that this book was a good book from other readers, and although it probably would not make it into my top ten, it was definitely an interesting read and is something that I think each reader should read at least once! Overall, this book was very intriguing and also a great read.
