The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill

Review by Sophia

girl who drank the moon book cover

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is an entertaining story revolving around a young
girl who was unknowingly magicked as a baby. If you enjoy reading books of magic and
fiction, this will definitely suit your style and will take your imagination to the moon! The
only fair-minded and reasonable rating would be four out of five stars. The reason
behind this is that though the book tells a beautiful story, some moments seem to drag
on forever. However, this is made up for with its amazing characters. They’re clever,
interesting, and keep the book exciting and fun! It’s definitely worth reading and is sure
to keep your mind occupied for hours at a time!
The book takes place in a swamp that lurks beside a town named Protectorate.
The two main characters are named Luna and Xan. Luna is a young girl in her tween
years most of the story and unknowingly possesses magical powers that start to grow
and develop overtime. Xan, Luna’s grandmother, is a witch that cares for Luna with her
two companions, Glerk and Fyrian. She might be mistaken for a rotten woman by
Protectorates villagers, but in reality, she is kind hearted and caring. Though there are
many other characters, these are the two main characters we learn about in this book.
Every year, Protectorate holds a day known for sacrificing the youngest infant in
the town. This tradition has been going on for decades until one day, a woman refuses
to give her child to the council of elders. In the end, they take the baby from her by force
and give her to the witch, Xan. Xan is supposed to deliver her to another town and give
a loving couple this child. During these journeys, Xan usually feeds the infants starlight.
However, when this particular child falls into Xan’s care, she accidentally feeds her
moonlight and gives her extremely strong and possibly dangerous powers. With this
risk, she can no longer be given to a family for she could endanger them, so Xan
decides to keep this child and raise her as her own. She is given the name, Luna and
erases the powers until she is older.
Throughout the story, Xan raises Luna and gives her a delightful childhood. She
becomes well-educated and well-cared for in her home with Glerk and Fyrian. These
two characters are Xan’s two most trusted companions and both have built a strong
bond and friendship with Luna. All is going well until Luna starts to notice unusual
activities in her day. Her mind starts to recall some mysterious memories from her
infanthood which includes thoughts about her mother. While this is happening, small
amounts of Luna’s magic and potential is starting to unleash and it adds to her curiosity
and knowledge of what's starting to happen.
The rest of the novel is consistent with the current amount of thrill and
excitement, maybe even more. The Girl Who Drank the Moon is definitely a book one
should consider reading if you are interested in this type of magic and fiction!
