The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

Review by Lauren

the silent patient book cover

The book The Roommate, by Rosie Danan, is a fun paced rom com. The main character, Clara Wheaton has moved from the East Coast all the way to California. Clara’s family is very infamous for having many scandals and being extremely well off. Clara vowed that she would never have herself a scandal, and instead be the golden child so her family never has to worry about what she might do. This all changes when Clara’s childhood crush, Everett, has invited her to stay with him in California. Clara has always thought that her and Everett are meant to be, and this is their chance to finally be together. Clara then decides that for Everett she would move cross-country to a state she has never lived in, and face her family’s disappointment in her. When Clara arrives at Everett’s apartment, she is shocked to not find Everett there, but instead a mystery man named Josh. Josh is the very opposite than Clara, and someone who Lara normally would not associate herself with. Clara is trying to figure out what Josh does for a living, but Josh is very hesitant to tell Clara. When Josh is out working Clara decides to look up Josh’s name, and is very shocked to see what came up as his profession. Clara decides that she needs to make apartment rules in order to share this small space and to keep Clara and Josh separated. Can Clara and Josh stay roommates after a shocking turn of events?

I really enjoyed this book. I thought that it had great banter between Josh and Clara. They both had such opposite personalities from each other and it was funny to see them mesh, and especially funny having to see them live together. I love how the first thing that Clara did was go through a list of rules with Josh. I really enjoyed how you were able to get to know their personalities in the book. I also enjoyed how the book was serious in some manners, especially with different types of work, conquering your fears, and making sure that what you are doing is best for you. I think that in this book Clara learned a lot about herself and moving away from her control freak family was one of the best things that has happened to her. I love all the relationships that were formed through characters, like Clara and Naoimi’s friendship. It took a little bit of time for them to warm up to each other, but I think that they make a truly powerful connection and they like each other more than they let on.

I am rating this book a 9/10. I would have enjoyed chapters that switched the point of view from Clara to Josh. I really enjoyed the epilogue that came at the end of the book and nicely tied up the story in a very happy ending. I think that this was a very well paced book that even threw in a couple plot twists, just when I was thinking that everything was going to smoothly work out. I think that anyone who loves a rom come with a happy ending would truly enjoy this book!
