Keeping cool is important. Everyone is at risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke when the weather temperature climbs up. The City has several cooling centers available for the public use.

Cooling Centers

  • Stay hydrated! Make sure to drink water to stay cool.
  • Avoid wearing black. Wear light colored, loose-fitting clothing that absorbs less heat.
  • Wear hats and sunscreen if outside. Try to stay out of direct sunlight if possible.
  • Avoid breaking a sweat. If you are working outdoors, take frequent breaks in a shaded area to cool down.
  • Never leave children, seniors or pets unattended in closed vehicles or in buildings that aren’t air conditioned.
  • Stay cool indoors – if your home is not air-conditioned, visit one of the City’s cooling centers

Tips for Pets



  • Ensure pets have access to shade and cold water.
  • Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle, even with the windows open. It only takes a few minutes for the temperature inside the vehicle to climb. With only hot air to breathe, your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke.
  • Always exercise your pet in the cool of the morning or evening. In extreme hot weather, keep walks to a minimum to avoid having them stand on hot pavement
  • Keep in mind, your pet is much closer to the ground and their body can heat up quickly.
  • Shaving your pet’s hair to a 1-inch length will help prevent overheating. Use caution and do not shave the hair down to the skin. Removing all the hair exposes your pets to the harmful rays of the sun.

Be on alert for symptoms of heat-related illnesses:

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include cool, moist, pale or flushed skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness and exhaustion. If someone exhibits signs of heat exhaustion, move them to a cooler place, fan them, remove or loosen tight clothing, spray the person with water or apply cool, wet towels to the skin. If they are conscious, give small amounts of cool water for them to drink slowly. Monitor their condition. If the person refuses water, vomits or begins to lose consciousness, call 911.

Symptoms of heat stroke include hot, red skin (dry or moist), changes in consciousness, vomiting and high body temperature.
Call 911 immediately if someone shows signs of heat stroke. If possible, move the person to a cooler place. Quickly cool the person’s body by spraying the person with cold water, or cover the person with cold, wet towels or bags of ice.
