On Monday, June 11, City staff, along with the City's project design consultant, attended the Balboa Island Improvement Association's monthly meeting for the purpose of presenting the project efforts to date to the larger Island community. Based on the positive feedback received from the community members in attendance, staff will be moving forward with evaluating proposals and selecting a consultant for the first phase of the project, an improved drainage system for Marine Avenue.
A project of this magnitude requires a high level of coordination, especially considering the project location. The construction of the approved improvements will need to be completed in phases. Every effort will be made to coordinate with community members to ensure a smooth and efficient project. Stay tuned to this web page for project updates as we move through the design, award and construction phases.
At the request of many Balboa Island residents and business members, the City has been working with a community committee on the vision of a redesigned Marine Avenue. While the street has a well-established appearance and mature streetscape, there has been a long-standing issue with proper drainage in the area and the street trees have reached beyond their life expectancy. These issues heighten the need for a complete rehabilitation for the entire length of the street.
The community committee is made up of approximately 20 Balboa Island residents and business owners. They have been working with staff from the City's Public Works Department and the City's project design consultant to create a new vision for the street that will remain true to the unique charm of Marine Avenue and quaint community of Balboa Island. Working together, the committee defined several ideas for possible improvements, which include the following:
- Repaving walkways,
- Upgraded lighting,
- Tree replacements,
- Enhanced crosswalks, and
- Improved drainage system.
A presentation was given to attendees of the June 11 meeting, which depicts sample renderings of the proposed improvements. Please note, the renderings are samples to present a design concept. The final proposed improvements will be developed with input from the committee and community members.
