Sunday Afternoon at the Central Library

The Newport Beach Public Library hosts outstanding classical and instrumental music and performers throughout the year. The monthly hour-long Sunday Musicales are held at 3 p.m. in the Friends Meeting Room at the Central Library, 1000 Avocado Avenue, Newport Beach. If you missed a Sunday Musicale, you may be able to view it on NBTV streaming video.

Sophia Flores & Andrew Edwards, saxophone and piano duo

Sunday, September 15, 2024, 3 p.m., Central Library Friends Room

Classical saxophonist Sophia Flores and pianist Andrew Edwards will be performing music significant to the Holocaust, including works by Jacobi, Ullmann, Gebirtig, Messiaen, Schulhoff and others. This performance is in remembrance of the six million murdered Jews, who used music as an outlet for resistance and hope, even when their music was silenced.

Latsos Piano Duo

Sunday, October 13, 2024, 3 p.m., Central Library Friends Room

Described as having "awe-inspiring artistry," the Latsos piano duo are a global piano force. Their upcoming October program at the Newport Beach Public Library will include pieces by Bach, Brahms, Schubert, Chopin, Kapustin, as well as their own 4 hands arrangement on J. William’s music from the masterpiece movie, Shindler’s List.

Victor Shlyakhtenko, piano soloist

Sunday, November 10, 2024, 3 p.m., Central Library Friends Room

Pianist Victor Shlyakhtenko, winner of the 2018 Los Angeles International Liszt Competition and Lang Lang Foundation Young Scholar alumnus, presents a solo piano recital featuring the monumental B minor sonata of Franz Liszt.  Also on the program are works of the romantic era and early 20th century.

Duo Duoro, flute and harp duo

Sunday, January 19, 2025, 3 p.m., Central Library Friends Room

Formed in Los Angeles in 2022, Duo Duoro is a flute and harp duo featuring harpist Kaitlin Miller and flutist Arin Sarkissian. Duo Duoro recently won 1st Prize in the 2024 Frances Walton Chamber Music Competition and were selected as recommended artists by the Beverly Hills National Auditions and Consortium of Chamber Music Presenters of Southern California. The ensemble aims to showcase their instrument pairing through adventurous programs of undiscovered soundscapes and diverse musical identities.

Astral Mixtape, alternative classical ensemble

Sunday, March 16, 2025, 3 p.m., Central Library Friends Room

Astral Mixtape is a multifaceted band of LA-based musicians who blend classical instrumental virtuosity with the sounds of their generation. They collaboratively create and perform original compositions and arrangements using a unique line-up of two violins, cello, piano, synthesizer, and electronics. Their music combines the spectacle of pop, the spontaneity of jazz, and the experimentation of contemporary music.

Syrinx Quintet, reed ensemble

Sunday, April 13, 2025, 3 p.m., Central Library Friends Room

An ensemble comprised of five prominent artist-educators from Southern California, Syrinx Quintet boasts versatile and diverse programming aiming to expand reed quintet repertoire in an educational context. Experienced in a wide variety of styles, the ensemble delights audiences with their eclectic repertoire and dynamic performance style. Advocates for education and local engagement, Syrinx takes pride in commissioning new works from Southern California composers.

Marina Grozdanovic, piano soloist

Sunday, May 11, 2025, 3 p.m., Central Library Friends Room

Titled Sounds of France, Ms. Grozdanovic's solo piano performance will include music composed in France during several different centuries, including the Baroque, Romantic, and Impressionistic eras. She will perform pieces by Rameau, Couperin, Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel.


Sunday Musicales at the Central Library are free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served, limited by room capacity of 200. Funding is graciously donated by the Newport Beach Friends of the Library. View the performance video archive.
