Deterring Sea Lions in Newport Harbor

Boaters and community members share Newport Harbor with sea life, including sea lions. However, rules are in place that require boat and dock owners to install and maintain effective and humane deterrents to prevent sea lions from making themselves at home on vessels and structures. 

All mooring permittees and dock owners must regularly check to make sure their deterrent measures are in place and are effectively preventing sea lions from boarding. These efforts protect the harbor from property damage, noise disruption, possible pollution or harbor safety issues. These animals are protected as part of the Federal Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) therefore, boaters and property owners must only use deterrents that will not injure or otherwise harm the sea lions.
