Website Accessibility Statement

The City of Newport Beach (City) recognizes the importance of making its digital government services available to the largest possible audience and has attempted to design the newportbeachca.gov website to be accessible. The City has also installed an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) widget, located in the lower right hand corner of the screen, to automatically modify page content to make it further accessible.

Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits all state and local governmental agencies from discriminating against persons with disabilities and from excluding participation in, or denying benefits of programs, services or activities to, persons with disabilities. To ensure that people with disabilities can fully participate in and benefit from the public services offered by the City, website accessibility standards have incorporated into the design and maintenance of the City’s website to ensure accessibility for all people regardless of ability or method of access. We strive to confirm at a minimum with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C. § 701 et seq.) and Section 255 of the Communications Act (47 U.S.C. § 255).

We welcome your feedback and suggestions to help us make our website more accessible. If you have difficulty accessing information on our website, please contact us using the information at the bottom of the page.

What are we doing with accessibility?

To help us make the City’s website a positive place for everyone, we’ve been using a number of voluntary consensus standards, namely the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 from the World Wide Consortium (W3C). These guidelines are intended to be a globally recognized, technology-neutral standard for web content and explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities, and user friendly for everyone.

Non-conforming content

Should we become aware of content on the City’s website that may not conform to the current WCAG or similar standards, we will work to update the content, with reasonable swiftness, to an acceptable level, or remove the content from the website. If you find any problems, please notify us of the issue by using the contact information at the bottom of the page.

How are we doing with accessibility?

We’ve worked hard on the City’s website and toward achieving the goal of making web content more accessible for people with disabilities, and user friendly for everyone. Our ADA widget provides text enlargement, high contrast mode and saturation, keyboard navigation, highlighted links and further modification of spacing, alignment, line height, cursor control, amongst other features. The widget also provides the capability to pause animations and make the content dyslexia friendly.

To affirm our commitment, employees designated as website content editors have also received training in the WCAG standards. We monitor the website regularly to maintain this goal and will update this statement periodically in response to the ongoing evolution of accessibility tools, techniques, needs and requirements. Upon request made using the contact information at the bottom of the page, all information contained on the City’s websites can be made available in an alternative format, or arrangements can be made by City staff to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.

Where can you get additional accessibility assistance?
