Sea Lion Season
A Message from the Harbormaster:
Attention Newport Harbor Mooring Permittees and Private Dock Owners, this is a friendly reminder regarding your responsibilities in keeping Newport Harbor safe, quiet, and thriving during the upcoming sea lion season.
Below are some key points you should be aware of:
- Sea lion season in Newport Beach typically runs from May to October, while some sea lions are present in the Harbor year-round.
- Sea lions seek large, flat surfaces, such as vessels or docks to rest and conserve their energy. While competing for space, sea lions bark loudly, day and night. This barking can be extremely disruptive to those living in the adjacent communities.
- Mooring permittees and private dock owners are responsible to proactively secure their vessels, docks and accessories to prohibit sea lion intrusion.
- Failure to take deterrent action within seven days of notification, will result in issuance of a citation (NBMC 17.25.020 and NBMC 17.50.100).
The City’s Harbor Department is a community resource and works to proactively protect property (vessels and docks), provide assistance to the residential community, and protects the health of sea lions and other marine mammals.
For more information and resources for sea lion deterrents, visit the Harbor Department's website or call 949-270-8159.
