The Kane Chronicles: The Throne of Fire , by Rick Riordan, is the second book in the trilogy of
The Kane Chronicles. After defeating Set, the Kanes realize that what the real danger is.
Apophis, the Chaos snake, is awakening, and the Kanes are the only ones who can stop it!
Luckily, their Brooklyn mansion has turned into a training ground for other young Egyptian
magicians. New magicians, that got Sadie and Carter’s call for help, all have their own unique
skills that will be crucial to the downfall of Apophis. A young magician named Walt is excellent at
pulling tricks out to destroy his enemies, but he has a new strange power that no one knows
about. Jaz is the excellent healer of them all, and helps Sadie and Carter is a big way. Also,
more than 20 magicians are learning under Sadie and Carter Kane, to ultimately learn how to
prevent further chaos and defeat Apophis.
In order to defeat the Chaos snake, Apophis, the magicians will have to awaken the sun god
Ra. They have to do this, because Ra is Apophis opposite, and is the balance in the Chaos. The
Kanes hope that if they awaken Ra, then Ra can defeat Apophis to settle the balance in the
world. But, it won’t be that easy.
In order to awaken Ra, The Kanes have to collect three scrolls, that make up the book of Ra.
Once they have the book of Ra, the Kanes will have to sail down in the Duat, a magical place
that exists between the mortal and the immortal world. In the Duat, they will face many
challenges, that need the spells in the book of Ra, to pass. Once they have passed all of these
challenges, they will have awoken Ra. Sadie, the one who can read the scrolls, is responsible
for reading the spells of the scroll, to get past all of the challenges. And also, they only have 12
hours to complete it! Will they be able to finish this maze of challenges, before Apophis
awakens?
Some of my favorite parts of this book involve romance. In the first book, The Kane Chronicles:
The Red Pyramid , Zia, a young magician, was actually in her Shabiti form, or a messenger form.
Carter thinks that he is in love with Zia, but is saddened to find out that she was just in her
Shabiti form. This makes him determined to find the real Zia in this book, which makes them
take a detour in their quest. What they don’t know is that Zia is a crucial part of completing their
mission.
This is a great book because the author, Rick Riordan, makes all of the characters so relatable.
He also makes the story seem like it is real by using descriptive language to immerse the
reader. It’s so effective that it always leaves me feeling sad that Egyptian magic isn’t real! But
who knows? After reading the Trilogy of The Kane Chronicles , you will feel like a real Egyptian
magician too!
