Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

heir of fire bk cov

Heir of Fire, the third book in the Throne of Glass series is written by Sarah J. Maas. The story picks up where Crown of Midnight ends, so I highly recommend reading Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight before Heir of Fire. The book starts off once Celaena made it to Wendlyn after being ordered to go there by the King of Adarlan to assassinate the royal family. Celaena does not agree with the King’s ways and has plans to try and disobey and then destroy him. While in Wendlyn, she meets a soldier named Rowan Whitethorn. Rowan has been given the orders by Queen Maeve, Celaena’s aunt, to take Celaena to meet the Queen since Celaena’s mom never let them meet. After they finally meet,  Celaena is told by Queen Maeve that Rowan will be training her to master the magic that she has. Although Celaena wants nothing to do with her magic, she decides that making a deal with Queen Maeve could work in her favor.  Celaena decides she will train and master her magic in return for information about the Wyrdkeys that the King possesses. Celaena’s end goal is to try to find the third Wyrdkey before the King of Adarlan, who already has the first two. Although the Wyrdkeys do not play as big of a role in this book as the last book, I think they will become very important in Queen of Shadows, the fourth book in the Throne of Glass series.  Back in Adarlan, Dorian is trying his best to keep his power hidden from the King, where he makes some new friends who help him.  Chaol makes an alliance with an interesting group of people, but Dorian doesn’t agree with them, causing trouble between their relationship.

I think this particular book was more of a filler book, tying up loose ends and character growth, rather than an action book like Throne of Glass. I loved learning more about Celaena’s past, seeing her grow as a person and watching her personality come out. A lot of the unanswered questions from the prior two books come full circle and are finally answered. Many relationships are tested, and there is a ton of drama going on in the castle that Celeana doesn’t know about. My favorite part had to be the last 100 pages which had plot twist after plot twist, a small battle, and characters are forced to pick sides and stand up for what’s right.  It definitely ended with a bang!  My least favorite part was Manon’s point of view and her sub-plot of the witch fights. Manon is the head of the Blackbeard Witch Clan, but she never interacted with any of the main characters. The King wanted the three witch clans to fight each other to see who was the strongest and best clan to serve him.

Overall, this was a good book, although not my favorite book in the series so far. I give in an 8 out of 10 but I would highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy story with a ton of action, a hint of romance, and characters that you will fall in love with.
