Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas

Review by Lauren

kingdom of ash bk cov

Kingdom of Ash is the eight, and final book to the fantasy series, Throne of Glass, written by Sarah J. Maas. This book picks up after Empire of Storms, and reading order does matter in this series. Aelin Galathynius has been captured by the Queen of Fae, Maeve. Maeve has locked Aelin into an iron coffin, which cancels out her fire powers and leaves Aelin defenseless. Aelin is having a hard time of what is real and what is fake during this time because Maeve wants Aelin to swear the blood oath to her and is giving Aelina false reality in hopes that she will submit.  Fenrys is also still sworn under the blood oath to Maeve, and he is trying to provide comfort and security to Aelin whenever he is able to. Rowan, Lorcran, and Gavriel had the blood oath torn from them because of their allegiance to Aelin and are trying to find where Maeve has taken her in hopes of rescuing her. Dorian and Mannon have the Wyrdkeys and are currently trying to find the third and final one before Errawn finds it. Lyssandra and Aedion are trying to hold up the front lines and fight against Maeve’s troops.  Will they be able to win this war and keep their promise of a better world?

I really enjoyed this book. As the last one in the series, I expected it to be the best book and it was. It lived up to all my expectations and everything came together full circle in the end. The beginning felt a little long, especially since all the characters were separated from each other but the book really did fly by even though it was 980 pages.  I really enjoyed how descriptive the book was, Maas included every little detail to really paint a picture of what was happening. The only thing that I did not like about the book was that since the characters were separated from each other for most of the time, each chapter would switch point of view from one character to another and that sometimes would get confusing on who was where and with who. Also, Maas would switch point of views right before something big was going to happen to often lead you in a cliffhanger from chapter to chapter.

I am giving this book a 10/10, it was the best ending to the series I could have imagined. I love all of the Aelin and Rowan scenes along with the dynamic between Dorian and Mannon. Even the characters that I did not especially like in the beginning, like Mannon and Lorcran, had their time to shine in this book and had their redemption arc. Mannon even ended up as one of my favorite characters of the series!  Throughout the series, each character grows into a better person than they were in the first book or when we met each new character. I would highly recommend the Throne of Glass series to anyone who enjoys high stake adventures, a little bit of romance, lots of fantasy, and lovable characters that you will fall in love with.
