Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas

Review by Lauren

empire of storms book cover

Empire of Storms is the seventh book of the Throne of Glass Series written by Sarah J. Maas.  This book could be followed either by Tower of Dawn, or Queen of Shadows, depending on the reading order you choose.  The book begins with Elide, who is in the forest where Manon and the Thirteen have left her after escaping Duke Perrington.  Elide is on the run and is trying to find Celaena Sardothien, who will then bring her to Aelin Galathynius, but Elide does not know that they are the same person.  Lorcan Salvaterre has been running from the beasts that the Yellowlegs witch clan sent after him.  While he is running from the beasts, he spots Elide and is instantly drawn to her.  Meanwhile, Aelin, Aedion, Lyssandra, and Rowan are also in the woods, where they have a meeting with the lords.  Aelin is busy with preparing for war and trying to get as many allies as possible to help her fight against Queen Maeve and Erawan.  Aelin is trying to hatch a plan, and making sure that Lorcan is unable to track her down once he realizes that she gave him fake Wyrdkeys.  Manon and the Thirteen are back in Morath, where her angry grandmother awaits them because of the stunt she pulled for not killing Dorian and for releasing Elide out of Duke Perrington’s captivity.  Manon is starting to think that her grandmother may not know what is best for her, and is slowly starting to defy her.

I enjoyed Empire of Storms, although this book was not one of my favorites.  For me, the middle of the book got too long. I felt that the same things happened multiple times to the same characters, and I started to get bored.  I enjoyed the beginning of the book. It was entertaining to see the majority of the main characters all in the same forest together and did not end up meeting for a while.  The ending of the book was amazing, there were many plot twists and the action in the final 150 pages was top tier.  The book was very well thought out.  The author gave many hints to what might happen throughout the book, but I did not pick up on them until they actually happened in the plot!  The book was a little chaotic as there were many different subplots under the main plot so it was confusing trying to figure out what was the most important one to follow.  There were also many new characters in this book, so at times it got confusing with who was allies with certain characters.  It also got confusing if a character brought up was a character from the current time or from many years in the past and they were just referencing something that had previously happened.

I am giving this book an 8/10.  The action at the end saved this book for me because the middle of it got repetitive.  I love all the characters and I feel like I have really gotten to know and love them, especially the ones that I did not like in the beginning.  I love Rowan and Aelin’s relationship and I loved reading about Aedion and Lyssandra and Manon and Dorain's relationship.  I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys action, romance, witches, demons, and revenge!
