Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer

Review by Chloe

The book Instant Karma written by Marissa Meyer is an exciting read
with tension, love, hate, and fate. This read can be enjoyed by people ages
12 and up and it is in the paranormal fiction genre. This genre, otherwise
known as literary fiction, includes beings and occurrences that lie outside
the realm of conventional scientific knowledge of the natural world. Despite
the possibility of supernaturalist components in the paranormal genre.
Synopsis: Excessively ambitious Prudence Barnett has a habit of
passing judgment on the rude, snobbish, and indolent locals of her
coastal town. She wakes up with the sudden power to cast instant karma
on everyone around her after a night out with her friends during which she
sustains a head injury, fulfilling her dreams of karma-based justice. Pru
takes advantage of the ability, punishing everyone from public vandals to
nasty gossips, but Quint Erickson, her lazy lab partner, is the one person
on whom her powers backfire. Quint is annoyingly adorable and admirably
honorable, especially when it comes to his work with the local sea animal
rescue facility. Pru starts to learn the truth about newborn otters,
environmental change, and love crossed signals when she decides to work
at the rescue facility for extra credit—though not necessarily in that order.
Her recent karmic revelations highlight how di􀆌cult it is to distinguish
between goodness and conceit, generosity and greed.
Synopsis + Extra Details: Prudence is a quirky, overachiever, A-grade
perfect student, ambitious, a little self-absorbed, and judgmental for the
reason of being obsessed to be perfectionist! Readers can tell that it is
hard for her to feel sympathy and in the first chapters you love to hate her.
Later she gains a spiritual power after getting a head injury on a night out
with her friends. With the ability to cast both good and bad karma on
people in all sorts of situations she makes sure everyone gets what they
deserve. When she sees something unfair, she just concentrates, snaps and
voila. The person who says something unfair or acts horrible finds
themselves in an absurd, humiliating position. So, the lazy, rude, arrogant
town folks will probably be on her punishment radar. However, for some
strange reason, her powers won’t work when it comes to her longtime
nemesis or reluctant lab partner Quint Erickson. He arrives so late to the
most important presentation of the year, never finishes a task he’s
attended, and never listens to anything. Even worse, her classmates
practically adore him! Including her twin brother Jude, now considered a
traitor in her mind. When she tries to punish him for any of his annoying
attitudes and lack of discipline, he refuses to cooperate. Making the
situation even more awful, after her hard work Prudence gets C which is
unacceptable for an ultra perfectionist girl like her. She needs to redo her
assignment with Quint but first she has to convince him to work with her.
Unfortunately, the two aren’t fond of each other and Prudence knew that it
would take a lot to convince him. As readers can imagine, Prudence doesn’t
give up so easily. She finds out Quint’s mother works at Sea Animal Rescue
Center and Quint also works there as a volunteer. To convince Quint to
redo the project, she o􀆋ers her help to work at the center for four weeks.
Luckily Quint accepts her o􀆋er because he believes she will run away
before her first shift ends. Little does he know, Pru is a very stubborn and
perseverent character. At first Prudence doesn’t like to connect with
animals, hates the fish smell but she slowly realizes the value of the job
they’re doing. And she finally realizes her lazy, absentminded nemesis is a
responsible, hard worker. Except, he might be more than that. Could she be
catching feelings? Well it doesn’t matter anyways considering how much
Quint hates her, or does he…
