Wonder by R.J. Palacio

wonder book cov

Auggie Pullman is a little boy that has some difficulties and because of his difficulties, he wears a space helmet to cover his face. He had been getting homeschooled his whole life until it was almost time for him to attend middle school. Since an entirely new school year was going to start, his mother wanted him to start going to school in person. For him to experience and know what being a “regular” student is like. That’s what Auggie thought beginning from when he was little. He felt that he was unordinary and different from everyone else. He is, but not quite. Auggie does all the things that you can imagine an ordinary boy doing, but the thing that makes him quite unordinary is his outside looks. His looks got him to think this way because everywhere he go, people would get scared of him. Unfortunately, he has a disease, which led him to where and how he is now. After a while, he made a brave choice to try and start going to school in person. Since this was a courageous choice that Auggie made, his family does everything to not let Auggie down. They make sure that Auggie won’t be alone so they request some other kids at school to be by his side. Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte were the kids that the principal requested to help Auggie. These kids are super nice, but slowly show their true side after a while. Besides these toxic friends, Auggie does find a true friend. Her name is Summer and she came up to Auggie first during lunch without any requests from anyone. In this literature, Auggie experiences a lot of things, things that he wished he didn't have to go through, but also things that he’s glad about going through it. This book has really reminded me and taught me a big lesson. To never judge anyone by their outside looks. Just because someone looks different from other people, that doesn't mean that you should treat them differently or even look at them differently because we're all the same. I really loved the part when Summer showed up to be with Auggie the whole time. She really became his first-ever friend and stuck to being his best friend forever. This part made me teary and happy because of how Auggie was getting treated before. I also liked and enjoyed how supportive Auggie’s family members were throughout the whole story. They listened thoroughly and comforted him whenever he needed help. Even though this book has made me enjoy it, most of the time, it also has made me a little mad. This is because of the way Auggie would get treated sometimes. His friends betrayed him because they would think that he is gross, which made me feel uncomfortable. I would say that this was the only thing that I didn't really enjoy, but it gets better towards the end so it didn't make me disappointed anymore. I definitely recommend this book to other teen readers because this book teaches you a lot of lessons and is really fun. There’s also a movie version of this book so you can read the book and afterward watch the movie with your friends or family members. Now, read this book to find out what happens to Auggie and his adventures at school.
