The Selection by Kiera Cass

Review by Eva

the-selection book cov

What did you like or not like about the cover? Did the cover reflect the contents?
I really liked the cover. It was really pretty and I loved the colors on it. It did reflect the contents in a
sense where the main character, America Singer, is on the cover in a gorgeous blue gown that later
in the book starts to have a meaning.
Your review / Summary of the book that will make other teens want to read it.
The book is based around a sixteen year old girl named America Singer. She has two older and two
younger siblings. But her older brother left and her older sister got married so they no longer live with
America and the rest of her family. The world in The Selection is divided by casts. America and her
family are fives. They are all artists of some kind. America can play several instruments as well as
sing. But one day America received a letter saying that there would be a selection where 35 girls
would be chosen in a lottery to go to the royal palace where they would meet Prince Maxon. So that
one of the girls could be chosen by Prince Maxon and become the new Princess of Illéa. That was
the last thing that America wanted but then her mother made a deal with her so she ended up
signing the paper. Turns out that America was chosen to be one of the thirty five girls that would go
to the castle. Since that day she and the others are in a competition to win the Prince's heart and
become the new Princess.
Describe the most compelling aspect of the book.
The most compelling aspect of the book was how America was really different from other
contestants in the selection. She was kind and caring and she didn't care about the crown or the
status, that didn't matter to her. While other girls were excited to be in the castle for many reasons
she was just excited because the food was delicious. You would think she would be excited about
the extravagant clothing and expensive jewelry but no that didn't change her. She wore simple
clothing and even wore pants. So I found it very interesting how even among people of higher rank
than her she didn't change throughout the book. Her view of the palace and its prince changed but
she was still the same kind girl that there was at the beginning of the book.
Were you disappointed with the book for any reason? If so, what was disappointing?
There was nothing disappointing about the book that I can think of. The book was great and there
was always something happening so I never got bored while reading it.
Did you finish the book?
I actually finished the book quite fast. I didn't expect to finish it in a matter of days since it was not a
fantasy adventure type of book but I actually found it really relaxing to read compared to some of my
other books where something can happen at any time. But this book was really relaxing compared to
them and I think that's why I enjoyed it more than I expected. It was fun and interesting. And the
events in the book were followed quite well with other interesting story lines. So it was quite
enjoyable and I would definitely recommend it.
How would you rate this book?
I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. It was a really good book and I really enjoyed reading it but since
it is not what I typically like reading I would not rate it a 5 since I have read books that in my personal
opinion are better because of my preferences.
